Fans express 'disappointment' about new Netflix adaptation of classic novel
Fans are split as Netflix unveils the first look of its Pride and Prejudice remake, with some questioning another remake of the Austen classic
Fans are weighing in after Netflix released the first look at its new adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel.
The six-episode series of Pride and Prejudice stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy. Netflix teased the project this week, confirming it will come out in fall 2026.
Reactions online were swift, with a multitude of comments. The Pride and Prejudice novel has had multiple adaptations in the last decade. The teaser opens with Corrin perched on a rooftop, gazing across the countryside. Darcy appears in fleeting shots, seen through a doorway, riding on horseback, and leaving in a carriage. Corrin is known for portraying Princess Diana in The Crown and starring opposite Jack O’Connell in Netflix’s adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Lowden previously appeared in the BBC’s 2016 adaptation of War and Peace and earned Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his role in Slow Horses.
Netflix said the series will "join the yearn-aissance in the autumn to faithfully bring Jane Austen’s iconic story back to life for audiences that cherish it, while inspiring a new generation to fall in love with it for the first time."
Various users compared it to the 2005 film, with one writing on X, "My main disappointment in the visually stunning 2005 movie was the misinterpretation of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Would be nice if the new one restored some of the original flavor."
"Faithful adaptation is the key phrase i hope that means the wit and social commentary stay intact without adding unnecessary drama like some recent period dramas do," another fan commented.
Some questioned the need for another remake.
"Another remake? come on now these classics don’t need more faithful adaptations y’all just recycling ideas instead of creating smh," a post read the-mirror-icon_entertainment_tv_netflix.
Another added, "Every generation gets its own Mr. Darcy. Here we go again."
Still, many welcomed the update. "Netflix looked at the most adapted novel in English literature and said yes but have you seen OUR version," one user wrote.
Another questioned, "Dolly Alderton writing Pride and Prejudice? We know the dialogue is going to be incredibly sharp and relatable. This is going to be the definitive Gen Z adaptation!"
Another added, "Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden as Lizzy and Darcy is inspired casting! The ‘yearn-aissance’ is officially here. Can't wait for Fall 2026!"
Another viewer wrote, "Autumn release feels perfect for Pride & Prejudice. The cinematography already looks soft and atmospheric. If the chemistry hits and the dialogue keeps that classic wit, this could be a standout adaptation. Period drama season is officially back."
Netflix said the limited series will be a faithful, classic adaptation of Austen’s 1813 novel. The show is written by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn.
The streaming giant has not announced a specific premiere date beyond fall 2026.
