Historic hockey movie tops Disney+ charts after Team USA triumphs over Canada in Olympic final
Hockey fans are celebrating the win of Team USA against their notorious rivals Team Canada during both the men's and women's hockey gold medal final games this year
Team USA's double triumph over Team Canada in hockey spurred a spike in searches for sports biopic "Miracle."
The 2004 movie follows college coach Herb Brooks, played by Kurt Russell, as he was tasked with guiding the 1980 U.S. men's Olympic hockey team. His coaching style includes some rather unique and, perhaps, harsh techniques, but he's forced to manage some pretty bold characters, too. The young athletes face early setbacks before coming together to take down their Soviet team in the middle of the Cold War.
While Russia was banned from the Olympics, Team USA did take down another rival — Team Canada. The women's team faced the foes on February 19, and Megan Keller snagged the Golden Goal win. The men's team fought for gold on February 22, but they were also looking to prove themselves in a rematch from the 2025 Four Nations Face-Off game.
The Men's Hockey final ended regulation in a 1–1 score, sending the game to overtime. The Minnesota Wild's Matt Boldy scored first for the Americans during the first period. Canada got on the board with a goal from the Colorado Avalance's Cale Makar. However, the Golden Goal was secured during the 3v3 overtime by the New Jersey Devils' Jack Hughes.
Jack made an incredible accomplishment, bringing in the first men's hockey gold medal for the United States since 1980, when the notable movie takes place. In fact, the game was 46 years to the date with the "Miracle on Ice" occurring February 22, 1980 and the latest victory on February 22, 2026. The cheeky moniker "Miracle on Ice" is where the film derives its name.
After Jack secured the win, "Miracle" trended at number three on Disney+, where viewers can beam with pride while watching the-mirror-icon_entertainment_movies_disney.
Fans rave with excitement online about the film's resurrection. "Fine I’ll watch it a 3rd day in a row," said one fan. Another added, "The best movie."
A third said, "This is a story straight out of a Disney movie … So right now I’m watching Miracle about the 1980 team where they actually represented the heroes."
If fans want to watch a more realistic portrayal of the events, Netflix dropped a true documentary to follow the historical sports moment. "Miracle: The Boys of '80" was released on January 30, 2026.
Jack, regarded by fans as an American hero, celebrated the victory with a smile — but he was missing a few teeth. Earlier in the game, Jack took a stick to the face, drawing a major penalty on Team Canada. Jack's bloody smile was noteworthy to his youger broker, New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes. While Luke was in New Jersey training for upcoming NHL games, he jokingly told a reporter, "Jack's definitely not as pretty… not as good looking as he was before."
In Milan, Italy, for the Olympics, Jack was joined by his eldest brother, the Minnesota Wild's Quinn Hughes. Luke, the youngest of the three, was not on Team USA this year. However, the Olympics was certainly a family affair as Ellen Hughes, their mother, was coaching for Team USA women's hockey — helping them, too, secure that gold medal.
