Inside the intimate never-before-seen footage of Kurt Cobain in new Courtney Love doc

📅 21/02/2026

Antiheroine follows Courtney Love as she works on a new album and chronicles her life as a rock star, including her relationship with husband Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, and would have been 59 this year.

The legendary grunge musician died on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Kurt was married to Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, whose new documentary Antiheroine premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

The film features rare archival footage and never-before-seen material of the couple, from the early days of their romance to parenthood and the moments leading up to his tragic death. The 61-year-old rock star even addresses allegations, which have recently resurfaced, that Kurt's death was actually a homicide and that she may have had a hand in it.

Antiheroine premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2026. The new film, directed by Edward Lovelace and James Hall, features astonishing new videos and images of Kurt.

The rock doc weaves footage from the present day — where Courtney is now 61 years old, more than 2 years sober, and living in London — and intimate footage from her and Kurt performing on stage together, home videos with their daughter Frances, and the aftermath of his death.

Antiheroine includes footage from around the time when Courtney and Kurt first met in 1990. "He was so beautiful," she says in the film. "He had a really weird sense of humor. We were two designated scapegoats, rejected by our mothers and our fathers. We found each other, and we were home. It was really instant. That honeymoon phase of it went on for what felt like a really long time because it was so rich."

She adds, "When you find somebody you really get along with and can be yourself with, it’s easy."the-mirror-icon_entertainment_movies_kurt-cobain

The doc includes intimate self-recorded home videos of the couple in the bath together and playing with their daughter, Frances Bean, as well as footage from their 1992 Hawaii wedding and behind-the-scenes video of their iconic 1993 VMAs appearance with their baby.

They are also shown performing together, along with rare footage of Kurt playing with Nirvana. While there are many touching moments that give insight into their love for one another, the videos and images featured in the film also show the depths of the couple's destructive addiction.

Antiheroine shows the devastating lead-up to Kurt's suicide, with heartbreaking video of Courtney around the time Kurt overdosed in Rome, landing in a coma just weeks before his death.

The poignant film shows the immediate aftermath of his death from her perspective for the first time. Courtney is shown navigating the fact that Hole's critically acclaimed second album, Live Through This, was released just one week after her famous husband killed himself, as the world was blaming her for what happened to him, and still does to this day.
