As the horror crime movie Hannibal (2001) celebrates its 25-year anniversary, we're revisiting actress Jodi Foster's reasoning for turning down the chance to reprise her The Silence of the Lambs character

As Hannibal (2001) marks 25 years since its theatrical release, we're revisiting the reason why actress Jodie Foster refused to star in the horror movie sequel.

Hannibal, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore, celebrated its movie anniversary this month. The famous horror film was a sequel to the classic The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and followed Dr. Hannibal Lecter (played by Anthony Hopkins) seven years after he escaped from custody.

While Hannibal was a massive box-office success, Jodie refused to reprise her role as Clarice Starling in the movie. According to author Brian Raftery, in the novel Hannibal Lecter: A Life, Jodie had creative differences with the director's vision for the story and felt it betrayed her original character.

Jodie said, "I stand to make more money doing that sequel than I’ve ever made in my life. But who cares if it betrays Clarice, who is a person, in some strange way, to me. The movie worked because people in her heroism. I won’t play her with negative attributes she’d never have.”

In this, Jodie seemed to be referencing the ending of the Hannibal movie in which Clarice becomes a cannibalistic lover to Hannibal. She felt that this was unfaithful to her original character, as Clarice was portrayed as a resilient, intelligent hero who embarks on a terrifying journey to track down a dangerous serial killer.

In another interview with Total Film, Jodie said, "The official reason I didn’t do Hannibal is I was doing another movie, Flora Plum. So I get to say, in a nice, dignified way, that I wasn’t available when that movie was being shot."

She went on to add, "But Clarice meant so much to Jonathan and me; she really did, and I know it sounds kind of strange to say, but there was no way that either of us could really trample on her.”

Instead of reprising her character, actress Julianne Moore took on the role of Clarice in the sequel. While Jodie was not keen on the remake, some of her former castmates agreed to star in the movie, including Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Frankie Faison as Barney Matthews the-mirror-icon_entertainment_horror-films.

Hannibal became a huge commercial success, grossing over $351 million worldwide on a $87 million budget and breaking numerous opening-weekend box-office records. The film received mixed reviews from moviegoers, with an overall audience score of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Many fans of The Silence of the Lambs agreed with Jodie's take on the remake, agreeing that they were not satisfied with the recasting and changes to Clarice's character.

On the movie review website, one critic wrote, "I really liked the movie, but I do have a few considerations. Clarice Starling, now portrayed by Julianne Moore, feels very different. Of course, ten years have passed since the first film, both in real life and in the story, but I still feel like it didn’t quite fit. It seems like a completely different officer, not the true Clarice."

Another added, "Julianne Moore is a great actress, but that role wasn't for her. It was a shame that Jodi Foster refused to play the part again."

While a third critic chimed in, "Very, very disappointing. After watching it, I know why Jodie Foster gave it a hard pass. Hannibal debuted on my birthday (February 9th). 23 years later, it is still the worst birthday of my life."

And someone else wrote, "Expecting the Audience to forget Jodie Foster as Clarice & replacing with Julianne Moore? NO, it doesn't work; they should have waited for Jodie to become available or not used the character at all."
